Huli Avalakki or Gojju Avalakki is a popular breakfast/snack recipe prepared using powdered beaten rice (poha). This is a tasty, spicy, tangy dish with a hint of sweetness from jaggery. Approx. preparation and cooking time: 15 mins Serves 3-4 persons List of ingredients: 1. Thick poha (Beaten rice) - 1 large cup 2. Tamarind juice - 1 small cup 3. Rasam powder - 1 tablespoon 4. Jaggery powder - 1 tablespoon 5. Curry leaves - 4 to 5 6. Chopped coriander leaves - 1 small cup 7. Cut green chilli - 1 8. Grated dry coconut - 1 small cup 9. Oil - 2 tablespoons 10. Channa dal - 1 teaspoon 11. Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon 12. Groundnuts - 1 small cup 13. Salt - 1 and half teaspoons Method of preparation: 1. Into a large bowl, add 1 small cup tamarind juice, 1 tablespoon each rasam powder, jaggery powder and mix all the ingredients. 2. Take 1 large cup thick poha and add into the mixer jar. Grind to make coarse powder. Add the powdered poha into bowl and soak for about 1 hour (add a little water if required, so that the poha is well soaked but does not become soggy). 3. Take a large wok/frying pan, add 2 tablespoons oil, 2 teaspoon each channa dal, 1 teaspoon mustard seeds and fry on medium flame until the seeds start to splutter. 4. Then, add 1 small cup groundnuts and continue frying until it is nicely done. Now, reduce the heat to low flame. 5. Add 4 to 5 curry leaves, 1 cut green chilli and fry for a few seconds. 6. Next, add the soaked poha and continue frying on low flame while ensuring there are no lumps. Add a little water if required. 7. Add 1 and half teaspoons salt (can vary as per taste and quantity), mix all the ingredients, cover with a lid and continue cooking on low flame until the poha becomes soft and is well cooked. 8. Garnish with 1 small cup coriander leaves, grated dry coconut, and finally mix before it is ready to be served. 9. Enjoy tasty avalakki for breakfast or as a snack.
