RAW VIDEO: MOUNT ST. HELENS. MAY 15TH, 1980. 3 DAYS BEFORE THE ERUPTION.

May 15th, 1980 Three days before the eruption This video begins with aerial reconnaissance of Spirit Lake, showing the Boy Scouts of America camp grounds, areas of logging and the vast tacks of forest that surrounded the lake. After landing, the KGW crew surveyed the campground as camp directors evacuated boats and camp gear preparing it to be airlifted to new location, safely away from Mount St. Helens. An interview starts at 10:45 into the video with a camp director as he describes the regular operations and how they hoped to reopen at the end of that summer. At 14:00 into the video KGW reporter, Boyd Levet, taped an on-camera stand-up for his news report that aired that evening. This entire basin, including the camp, was scoured out by the avalanche of the north face of the mountain and the secondary wall of volcanic material that exploded out from the mountain in a phreatic blast wall. The entire area of Spirit Lake and the surrounding valley is now part of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. This is newly restored video from the KGW archives.
