It's a common condition that affects nearly half of all men by age 60 and 90% of men by age 85. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. As the prostate gland enlarges, it can squeeze the urethra and block the flow of urine. Symptoms of BPH can include: Frequent urination, especially at night Difficulty starting urination Weak urine stream Feeling like your bladder is not emptying completely Urgent need to urinate Dribbling urine after urination BPH can be treated with a variety of medications and procedures, including: Lifestyle changes: Avoiding caffeine and alcohol, which can irritate the bladder and worsen symptoms. Medication: Alpha-blockers relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. 5-alpha reductase inhibitors shrink the prostate gland over time. Surgery: There are several surgical procedures that can be used to remove or shrink the prostate gland. It is important to see a doctor if you have any symptoms of BPH. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications, such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and kidney damage.
