Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a nigerian musician and political activist, the founder of afrobeat music. his stories are amazing you should look him up. he criticized the corrupt nigerian government in his music and pushed for a pan-african, socialist, united african republic. he built a community in lagos called the Kalakuta Republic, and inside was the Afrika Shrine, so we visited. No drugs! The original Afrika Shrine was burnt down by the nigerian military in 1977, and this is the new Afrika Shrine built my Fela's children to replace it. In the Shrine, there's little restaurants, art, a bar, and a stage. Fela played one off concerts nightly and performed Yoruba rituals on the stage in the Afrika Shrine, and people from all over came to hear his music. Fela was constantly under attack from the corrupt government, and in one awful military raid, his mother was killed. Fela wrote a song in her honor, and carried her coffin to the military barracks in Lagos. Fela's legacy is carried on by his sons and daughters many of who are also musicians and activists.
