We found the culprit! The oil filter housing gasket was, in fact, leaking as expected from a BMW with 160K miles. As mentioned in the first episode of this FBO series, a leaking OFHG can be catastrophic in N54/55 motors. We can't emphasize enough the importance of maintenance before going FBO. This was a stressful job and we had our fair share of headache and nightmares while doing this one. But we'd rather have a problematic wrenching over a problematic car.
