As with many museums, only a small part of our collection is on display to the public. Our archival collection is a hidden gem and we are thrilled to be able to share some of it with you online. This is the first in a series of Fulford Family letters we will be posting every Saturday. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. December 14, 1890 letter George and Mary Fulford would have been married for 10 years at the time of this letter. They met in Brockville while Mary was visiting her grandmother. Mary was 15 and George was 19, and they quickly fell in love. Since Mary was of a higher social class than George, her parents did not approve of the relationship and brought her back to Wisconsin. She was stubborn, so they stayed in touch by writing letters. Because of school and her grandmother, Mary continued coming to Brockville, which eventually led to their marriage in 1880. At the time of the letter they had two girls, Dorothy and Martha, but were still desperately trying to have a boy to inherit the family business. It was this year, 1890, that George bought the patent for Pink Pills for Pale People which became his most successful business venture, making him a millionaire in the coming years. The letter was written to Mary while he was traveling to make advertising contacts, hoping that this would limit travel in the upcoming years as he was often missing his family. This was the beginning of many business trips and many letters between the Fulford family. To learn more about the Fulford family, visit: https://bit.ly/35IH5Bo French translation coming soon
