A pair of mourning doves made a nest on my balcony and hatched two baby doves. The dove pair had two eggs and both parents incubated the eggs for about 14 days. I watched them grow up and filmed their journey of overcoming their fears. Mourning doves are also known as the American mourning dove, the rain dove, and turtle dove. They are one of the most abundant and widespread of all North American birds. Some people believe that when you see mourning doves you will have good luck. When the baby bird leaves its nest, it is called a Mourning Dove fledgling. Fledgling doves may be on the ground for several days before they are able to fly back up into a tree. This is a time when they are very vulnerable. They have to hide in bushes or underbrush during the night and are often caught by prowling cats.
