The previous European Commission made real progress on promoting gender equality in the labour market, including through new legislation such as the Directives on pay transparency, gender-based violence, gender balance on company boards, and adequate minimum wages. However, while gender equality was at the forefront of the 2020-2024 Commission agenda, the pace of progress has still been slow. Gender differences and inequalities remain in the labour market (and beyond), and some of the positive steps that were taken are now being challenged by various actors. The ETUI has a longstanding tradition of working on gender equality and diversity in its research and through the training it offers. To mark International Women’s Day, this event proposes a moment of exchange and reflection on the insights that this body of work can offer into the situation of women at work today. Our panels will discuss various ongoing issues, including: pay gaps and labour market segregation; the impact of different transitions, such as digitalisation, decarbonisation and demographic changes; and how to improve gender equality within the workplace through addressing women’s health and safety, as well as their representation and empowerment. The aim of this workshop is to engage with the audience regarding the ongoing ETUI research agenda. The policy implications of these issues will also be addressed by our guest speakers. This event takes place in solidarity with the national day of action of the Belgian trade unions.
