Here is a video of the Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge kickoff in San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Cayo, Belize from the Hawksworth Bridge. See the excitement and adrenaline as the paddlers race to claim first prize as they rush to the wooden bridge. This annual canoe race takes place on the holiday weekend in month of March (Benefactor's day). This four day long races starts in San Ignacio and ends in Belize City covering approximately 170 miles on the Belize River. This route was used by the Mayas centuries ago as their main means of transportation and later in the 1800's used to float log-wood from the jungles to the coast in Belize City. In the early 1900's it was used as a means of transportation for the people of Cayo to get their goods back and forth from Cayo to Belize City.
