A short documentary film presented by architecture critic Gokhan Karakus of the architecture of the Esma Sultan Yalisi located in Ortaköy, Istanbul by GAD Architecture led by architect Gokhan Avcioglu. The film and the architecture of this project addresses the continuity of Istanbul’s historic urban fabric on the Bosphorus withcontemporary city life. The design solution to layer a technological modernity behind the existing historic Ottoman shell of this 19th century mansion as an "act of architectural historic restoration” is shown in images of the topography, urban fabric, Bosphorus strait and the unique volumes of this event and conference center described by presenter Karakus as “one of the most ideal locations on the Bosphorus.” Architecture Esma Sultan is a multi-purpose event and exhibition space located directly on the Bosphorus Strait in the Ortakoy district in Istanbul. Built inside the ruins of a 19th century Ottoman mansion or “Yali” destroyed by a fire, GAD’s architecture relies on the concept of transparency, by highlighting the historic brick shell while providing a contemporary interior space for events. GAD Architecture’s design concept is based on a glass box set behind the remaining walls of the façade, keeping the history of the building intact while adapting it to the needs of the modern city. GAD’s design brings the building into the 21th century as a modern contemporary architectural intervention that provides an idyllic setting in the natural experience and history of the Bosphorus. The combination of the old and new architecture of the Esma Sultan Yalisi is a hallmark of the GAD’s architecture in Turkey over the last 20 years.
