“You can lead a man to slaughter, but you're never gonna make him think”. This song has been playing in my head for the last couple of months, whenever I think of Roy Harper’s accusation and trial and the damage it must be causing to him on so many levels. So that’s where this cover comes from. Roy has stated that Hors d’Oeuvres is a song about judgement. I believe the title has more to do with its placement on the album than with anything in its lyrics. The first verse is Roy’s dissing on court judges and jury, and then on the second verse he aims at the music critics (themselves a kind of judge). It’s a quite intense song with great acerbic lyrics but at the same time it has some very funny lines on it. As someone else wrote, one of the greatest f-u songs ever. I decided to overdub a second guitar underpinning the descending bass progression, as on the original version. For the second part I added a bit of cheap chorus effect to this guitar (done on the computer – ugh!). Finally, added the 12-string part on the outro. Just to make it a bit more interesting.
