Construction of the original bridge dates back to 1189 with hundreds of artistically unique stone lions from different eras line both sides of the bridge. The most intriguing feature of these beasts is the fact that there are more lions hiding on the head, back or under the belly or on paws of each of the big lions. Across the street from the bridge is Wanping Castle or Wanping Fortress built back in 1638 to protect Beijing from uprisings. It is very easy to get to this by subway.
