With COVID-19, informal learning institutions along with K12 schools were forced to pivot quickly to both crisis remote instruction and online learning solutions to continue delivering quality STEM programmes for children and families for in- and out-of-school learning. Creative solutions leveraged mobile-ready resources, DIY technologies, and networks to support open science investigations, data-rich laboratories, and hands-on construction to expanding ways to support children’s STEM learning at home. In this talk, Dr Hsi will share R&D projects and examples of adaptations of in-person informal STEM learning to new online and hybrid learning contexts to support the broad diversity of K12-aged learners and teachers learning at home using everyday materials, community and citizen science data, computational crafts, and open educational resources. Implementations were created using pragmatic pedagogical design principles based on 20 years of design-based research on how people learn. In this talk, she will also discuss aspirations for equitable post-pandemic STEM learning and future opportunities for design partnerships.
