When application reliability is crucial, it is hard to think of anything else as a priority…That is, until you get this month’s AWS bill. As cloud costs continue to rise, one culprit (that is often overlooked) is cross-availability zone (AZ) traffic. Setting up multiple AZs is a standard practice for reliability, but the constant chatter between services across AZs can be unpredictable and expensive. With Linkerd’s High Availability Zonal Load Balancer (HAZL), you can improve multizone clusters by maintaining availability even while minimizing costly cross-zone traffic. In this session, we dig into how multizone clusters work, talk about the tools that Kubernetes provides to manage them (or not!), and explain how HAZL extends Linkerd’s load balancer to keep traffic in-zone where it can and let traffic cross zones when it needs to. We end with a live workshop that lays it all out. Watch this video to get your hands dirty and see how it all comes together!
