The killings in Uromi, Edo State, where armed attackers invaded local communities and left multiple people dead, are a painful reflection of the violence ordinary Nigerians face with little to no protection. As families mourn their loved ones and communities live in fear, the absence of swift justice or adequate government intervention has once again exposed the profound failures within Nigeria’s security and justice systems. But Uromi is not an isolated tragedy—it connects to a broader systemic neglect and inequality crisis. While political elites continue to enjoy generous pensions and privileges, everyday citizens retire into poverty without safety nets. Lives are being lost daily due to preventable causes—from road accidents to medical negligence—because Nigeria still lacks a functional emergency response framework. Violence is increasingly turning into viral content, shared and forgotten, as justice remains elusive. Women continue to shoulder the weight of families, communities, and the economy without adequate support, representation, or protection. These issues are not separate—they stem from the same system that allows power to remain unchecked, care to be optional, and lives to be disposable.
