Hi everyone, we’re Jared and Nina, and we’ve been traveling full-time in our self-converted van, Sooty, for the past year. In this video, we’re sharing our 5 loves and 5 hates about our van, plus some hot tips for anyone planning their own van build. From lessons learned to mistakes we’d never repeat, this video is packed with advice to help you design the van of your dreams—or at least avoid some of our headaches. 5 Hates About Sooty 1. The Van Itself We have to start with the van. Our 2015 Ford Transit AWD has been a real pain. In just one year, we’ve spent over €8,000 on repairs. We break down exactly what went wrong, from [specific issues] to [another problem]. If you’re considering a Ford Transit, watch this before you commit. 2. The Bed We sleep on a transverse bed, and honestly, it’s just too tight for us. We’ll show you how cramped it can get and share a solution for building a better, more spacious sleeping setup. 3. The Kitchen Faucet Our faucet is completely impractical—it’s too small, awkward to use, and poorly positioned. If we could go back, we’d choose [insert a better alternative], which we’ll show you here. 4. Shower Placement The shower is positioned right next to the toilet with no real privacy. When Nina uses the toilet and the van door is open, well... let’s just say it’s not ideal. We have a simple privacy fix that could make all the difference for your build. 5. Swivel Seat We bought a swivel seat that turned out to be a terrible design—it’s clunky, uncomfortable, and not worth the money. We’ve linked the product in the description so you know what to avoid. Bonus Hate: The Garage Getting to our gear in the garage is a nightmare. We have to pull everything out just to grab something buried at the back. In this video, we share a great solution to avoid this problem in your own build. 5 Loves About Sooty 1. The Maxx Air Fan This fan is an absolute game-changer. It runs 24/7, keeps the airflow optimal, and works while driving, even in the rain. Plus, it draws minimal power, so we never worry about draining our batteries. 2. The Electrical System Our 600-amp lithium battery has been incredible, allowing us to stay off-grid for weeks. We’ll show you where it’s installed and how we charge it up. 3. The Kitchen Space We love our full-size kitchen—it’s just like cooking at home. With plenty of counter space and storage, it’s one of the best decisions we made in the build. 4. Fly Netting This simple addition has been a lifesaver, especially here in Morocco. The netting keeps all the bugs out while letting fresh air in—a small feature that makes a huge difference. 5. The Roof Rack Our roof rack is a total win. It holds our solar panels, surfboard, Star link, and even doubles as a balcony where we can sit and enjoy the sunset. Outro We hope this video has given you some inspiration—and maybe saved you from a few headaches—if you’re planning your own van build.
