Ever wondered if there was a bit more life left in that 6 year old 'maintenace free' car battery? Well there can be. Due to normal charging chemistry the battery solution can 'gas off', depleting the electrolyte resevoir. Older batteries had accessable cells to allow the user to do their own topups. Manufacturers know this and now seal the battery to prevent the end-user from topping up the cells to rejuvinate the battery. Here is a video of the successful experiment....battery voltage went from 11.9v up to 12.45v , just about right for a slightly discharged 6 year old battery.
