The crew, facing fuel shortage, was forced to abandon the vehicle after attempting to destroy it by placing explosives on the engine deck and near the turret. The Vimoutiers region saw numerous Tigers and Panthers left behind. Military historians have identified this particular tank as belonging to the 503rd SS Panzer Abteilung, which exhausted its fuel on August 19, 1944, while escaping the Falaise pocket. This late model 'E' variant features 40mm armor plating and was equipped with the 'nahverteitigungsvaffen' - a 360-degree rotating machine gun designed for close-quarter defense against infantry wielding anti-tank weapons like the Bazooka. There's ongoing debate about its paint scheme, specifically whether it displays the renowned 'grun-dunkelgelb-rot' (green, dark yellow and red) pattern. The sheer size of a Tiger 1 becomes truly apparent only when viewed in person. Visitors are welcome to examine and photograph the tank up close. The vehicle spent many years roadside and nearly met its end at a scrapyard, with some steel plates already removed before local authorities intervened. The village of Vimoutiers purchased it for 6,000 Francs, halted its dismantling, and restored the removed plates. Today, the Tiger rests on a platform at a dedicated parking area in Vimoutiers, accompanied by information panels detailing its history. The site is freely accessible and offers a rare opportunity to see a genuine Tiger 1 tank in person.
