The savanna biome supports many of Africa’s most renowned species, and consequently is often synonymous with scenes of Africa. Join Dr Bruce McKenzie for an exploration of the ecology of this iconic and important biome using Southern African case studies. Dr Bruce McKenzie has a PhD in biology from the University of Cape Town (UCT). During his lifetime he has been a lecturer at various universities, and sat on several prominent committees including the South African Institute of Biodiversity, CapeNature, and the South African chapter of the IUCN. He was the minister for the Forest Advisory Committee and was the first executive director of the Botanical Society of South Africa. He is passionate about promoting conservation education and has supervised many successful MSc and PhD candidates at disadvantaged universities. As well publishing over 40 scientific publications, recently he authored the book ‘an Ecological Guide to the Bush’. Dr McKenzie describes his ecological interests and contributions as “a jack of all traits in ecology and a master of none” with a focus on building confidence in, and creating opportunities for the youth.
