Operator & friend: George Knarr For the past two weeks, the Maryland Transit Administration has been demonstrating the all-electric XE60 CHARGE articulated bus throughout the region. Veteran operator, and soon to "retiree", George was given the opportunity to drive this articulated unit across the Baltimore region to accumulate as many miles as possible over an 11-hour assignment to test the range of battery's capacity. As this unit conclude it's two week stay, MTA will also be welcoming several other manufacturers with their 100% electric buses (Proterra; BYD; GILLIG(?); and NOVABus). Reason being is that state legislature are closing-in on a bill to mandate all state-funded buses purchased by 2030(?) has to be 100% electric. Further implying that this active 5-year contract with NOVABus for 350 diesel buses may well be the LAST diesel propulsion coaches to ever be ordered by the state of Maryland. Times are a changing and it's about time we adjust. Gonna the gritty sounds of combustion engines for silent electric motors. I guess you win this battle ECOLOGISTS! (just kidding) So far it rides smooth but the bigger question is how will MDOT go about the process to prepare for such major turnaround. Funding for the infrastructure to support overhead charging for parked coaches at all four divisions (meaning: Bush and Eastern will have to be converted into indoor facilities) and the amount of time an electric coach is on the road which will factor into scheduling and driver discipline & awareness... I may be getting ahead of myself but so far from George's experience, this XE60 particular could go 13 hours straight gracefully on a single charge overnight. It's all about who provides the best equipment to offer and something like will NOT be recommended to go CHEAP and see how it goes like MDOT usually go about things. They'll really have to think about this strategically and commit to staying ahead of any folleys the may arise. Overall, this is a positive step for the environment!
