With protein cereals, yoghurts, bars, even protein bread (!), getting enough protein in your diet has never been easier. But do you know how much do you actually need? Proteins are the “building blocks” of your body. You use protein to repair and grow all of your cells. Protein demands therefore change based on how much of you there is, and how active you are! Bigger? More of you to re-build, thus more protein. More active? More muscular repair required, so more protein! To find out how much protein your food contains, you have two options. Option 1 – read the label! Find the “per 100g” column, and follow it down to “protein”. Some simple maths is required! 20g protein per 100g and you’re eating 50g total? That’s 10g of protein. For fruits, veg, etc, I recommend Option 2 – using a database. I use fatsecret.com (no affiliation whatsoever, just an easy-to-use database without requiring your personal details), but myfitnesspal is also an excellent resource.
