Today is the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the 310th anniversary of the miracle of Sinj. Notes: Cetina: That's the river that flows through the City. The local region, the valley is therefore likewise refered as Cetina. Alkars: The Alkars are the cavalrymen, traditionaly equipped with lances. Context: In August 1715, during the second Morean War between the Venetians and the Ottomans, an Ottoman force of around 40,000–60,000 soldiers besieged the small Dalmatian town of Sinj, defended by the outnumbered 700 locals. The attackers aimed to seize this strategic fortress in the Cetina valley but the defenders resisted fiercely. On 15 August on the day of the Feast of Assumption, the townspeople prayed under heavy artilleryfire to Our Lady of Sinj and it's thanks to Her intervention that the defenders miraculously repel repeated assaults. After suffering heavy losses, the Ottomans withdrew and the victory has been celebrated ever since through the annual 'Sinjska Alka' tournament. This chivalric tournament is celebrated in every first Sunday in August. In this competition, the mounted riders traditionally dressed alkars, charge with their horeses down a track in an attempt to thrust their lance through a small metal ring called the alka, suspended on a rope. The alka is divided into scoring zones: hitting the center earns 3 points, the upper zone 2 points, and the lower zones 1 point each. Each rider has three runs, and the highest total score wins. During the Habsburg-era, the winners would grant either a briliant ring or 4000 crowns (during peace)/600 crowns (during wartime) from the King/Emperor himself.
