What should you do to control bleeding? Phillip Rice, Jr., MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine at Salem Hospital, explains the critical steps to care for someone who has been severely wounded. If the wound looks deep and severe, call for emergency help and avoid moving the injured person if possible. Only use a tourniquet if you’ve been properly trained, and use only commercially-available tourniquets that can be found in first aid kits. Controlling bleeding can help save a life by keeping the injured person stable until emergency help arrives.
