Any urinary bladder which becomes very small is called thimble bladder and there are many reasons why a bladder becomes small in size. The most common cause is a chronic infection which is there for years together and among these chronic infections in our country tuberculosis is a common cause. Tuberculosis causes fibrosis and thickening of the bladder and reduces the bladder capacity. The other causes of thimble bladder or small capacity bladder are radiation which is given to treat many types of cancers and also chronic insults to the bladder like chronic indwelling or a long term stone in the urinary bladder. Even a catheter which is there in the bladder for a long time give rise to a small capacity bladder. The symptoms are the patient has to pass urine repeatedly. Sometimes he may pass urine about 20 to 30 times per day and also about seven to eight times in the night. There is a constant urge to pass urine and sometimes there could be leak and there could be pain while passing urine also.
