Dorogu is Karelian and means road. In Karelian mythology and poetry, the road and travelling are used as very central metaphors, and in our films we travel along the paths of life. The first part of the film series, Veneh, describes moving from home and follows the transition from a young girl to  bride through the Karelian lamenting wedding tradition. The subject of the second film, Lindu, is death and burial and the related ancient Karelian mythology and traditions. The third part of the trilogy, Ilmu, opens the miracle and traditions of birth. Nature plays a central role in the films, hypnotically taking viewers on a journey to a mythical Karelian landscape, accompanied by breathtakingly beautiful music. Karelia had established itself its own language at least 1,300 years ago, but it still has no legal status in Finland. Today there are approximately 10,000 Karelian native speakers in Finland, and almost 20,000 who understand and speak it in some way. In Russia, there are less than 100,000 Karelians and about 50,000 of them speak the Karelian language. We aim to arouse a wider interest in Karelian culture, and to contribute to the revival of Karelian language skills, as well as add to the discussion on the current state and status of the Karelian language.
