The Dad Project--Thirty Sixth Installment: The Atomic Age

Welcome to “The Dad Project”. Tonight's episode takes a look at what shaped my father. It's a broad stroke, but he and his fellow Silent Generation travelers would find themselves in the swirls and eddies of several ages that were exponentially more powerful as a trio. The Jet Age, The Atomic Age, and The Space Age. He would participate in all three and tonight we'll have a look at the Atomic Age. The shadow of the Atomic Age still haunts us today. It's what made the Cold War seem like a hot war. The possibility of nuclear annihilation made the Cold War that much more horrific. As a pilot in the US Navy in the fifties, sixties, and seventies he would have trained and been made ready to deliver tactical nuclear weapons. We can all be thankful that never came to pass. In any case this is my effort to tell my dad’s story through the planes he flew. His first flight was on November 8th, 1957, and his last was on September 10, 1998. I had hoped that my dad would be on camera telling me these stories, but he died almost two years ago now, so I am telling his story for him. I have his autobiography, his flight logs that tells a precise story of landings and takeoffs that should equal the other except for one fateful flight on June 20th, 1973. If I am successful, “The Dad Project” will span a minimum of thirty-eight installments. One installment for each type of plane he flew. And for the camera and equipment geeks out there— The video was shot on the OMD EM-1 III with the Olympus 17mm 1.2 lens sitting atop a Giotto MH1301 Ball Head attached to the iFootage RB-A200 Cobra 2 22" Round-Base Monopod. In addition I used the Rhino ROV Pro for any tracking shots. Recorded with an Audio Technica AT 897 microphone through a TASCAM DR-60D Mk II and into the Atomos Ninja V Monitor. Video recorded with the Ninja V Monitor. A new Padcaster Pro teleprompter(fantastic piece of kit). Lights used—Pixel G1s RGB Video Light, Viltrox L116T and a Neewer CB60 60W LED Video Light with Softbox. The video is put together with Adobe Premiere Pro and the Tour Box Neo.
