The event coincided with the famous Great Exhibition of 1851, a massive world fair that brought together scientists, artists, inventors, and intellectuals from across the globe. London had become the center of the intellectual world, and chess masters gathered there to test their skills. Adolf Anderssen, a German mathematics teacher, emerged as the surprise winner of the tournament. Though not widely known before the event, he demonstrated extraordinary tactical skill and imagination over the board. Lionel Kieseritzky, his opponent in the Immortal Game, was a strong master originally from the Baltic region who later lived in Paris, where he was active as a chess teacher and columnist. Interestingly, the Immortal Game itself was not part of the official tournament. It was played casually at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand, a famous London chess café where masters gathered daily to analyze games, socialize, and challenge one another. Yet despite these dramatic sacrifices, his remaining pieces—two knights and a bishop—worked together in perfect harmony to trap the enemy king. Adolf Anderssen would later produce another famous masterpiece known as the Evergreen Game, played in 1852 against Jean Dufresne. Like the Immortal Game, it featured spectacular sacrifices and remains one of the most admired attacking games in chess history. Today, more than 170 years later, the Immortal Game is still studied by chess players around the world.
