CULTNE - Black Demonstrations, Yesterday and Today - 1988-2020 (Subtitles in English)

Black anti-racism demonstrations were registered by Cultne Archive’s cameras. We trace a parallel between the threat of police violence towards activists in 1988 & 2020. Despite more than 30 years difference, activists’ speeches are remarkably similar. Little has changed. The Black Movement March took place on the 20th of November 1988, centenary of the Abolition of Slavery, in Rio de Janeiro city centre, along President Vargas Avenue, from Candelária, past the Zumbi dos Palmares statue to Central Station. However a massive Military Police Force blocked the Avenue in front of the statue of Duke of Caxias, creating a showdown between the demonstrators and police and soldiers in readiness in front of the Ministry of the Armed Forces Building beside Central Station. In 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, young activists organised a Public Act against racism and genocide from the Zumbi dos Palmares Monument. The ostensive police presence was so inhibiting that the Act already began as a march with a heavy Military Police escort, walking from the monument to Candelaria and back. With admirable organisation and circumspection, leaders managed to avoid conflict, while denouncing the genocide of black youth in Rio de Janeiro state, especially by the frequent lethal Military Police incursions in the favelas where most of the black community live. Zumbi de Palmares is the legendary hero of Brasil’s first free republic in the colonial slave society of 17th Century Brasil. Palmares maroon community maintained its freedom for almost a century until the betrayal and assassination of Zumbi on 20th November 1695.
