During my three-month stay at an Airbnb in Fornillo, Italy, I encountered an issue with the host regarding an unnecessary pest inspection and pesticide application. Despite no evidence of infestation, the host insisted on scheduling pest control while I was actively staying in the unit. I initially objected, but later, since I planned to be away for two weeks, I requested that any inspections take place during my absence. I also asked the host’s staff to monitor for potential wasp or bee nests, as the accommodation was in a nature preserve with an outdoor toilet and shower. The day before my return, the host informed me that pesticide spraying was scheduled, seemingly as a preventative measure. When I objected, he claimed I would be responsible for any future infestation and asked about my insurance coverage. At that point, I disengaged and contacted Airbnb support. Fortunately, I had documented all communications within the Airbnb app, allowing Airbnb to mediate the situation. I authorized a pest inspector to enter while I was away, and the inspection confirmed that no pests were present. This experience reinforced the importance of documenting everything—using photos, videos, and keeping all communication within the Airbnb messaging app. Keeping messages short, professional, and to the point while maintaining a friendly tone can make a big difference in resolving disputes effectively.
