Wacom Creative Careers: Quincy Vadan, Jewelry Designer

Young people who love art don't have to choose between following their dreams and finding a career. There are so many other creative careers out there beyond the typical ones we often hear about like graphic designer, animator, comic book artist, or illustrator. One lesser-known creative career that can be extremely rewarding? Jewelry Designer. In this video, jewelry designer Quincy Vadan talks about his work, how he pursued the career, what it entails, the Wacom tools he uses, and why it's so rewarding. Vadan started out by studying fine art – primarily drawing and painting using traditional mediums – but in the evenings would research digital art online. He moved to learning digital painting in a more traditional style, but then 3D modeling started to catch his eye. So he moved to learning 3D sculpting with ZBrush software. After becoming a 3D creature and character designer, he realized he still wasn’t fulfilled, and discovered that some of the same tools and techniques he’d learned could be applied to jewelry design. Once again, he taught himself – this time jewelry design. After a few pieces he created for himself got attention from interested friends and acquaintances, he started making and selling pieces, and now creates jewelry full-time with Vadan Jewelry. He credits some of his success to technology – like his Wacom Cintiq Pro – that allows him to be essentially a one-man jewelry studio: he sculpts on his Cintiq Pro, prints prototypes on his 3D printer, gets them cast at a local jewelry casting house, then brings them back home to refine and polish.
