I remember opening the dorm door for the first time, hauling my stuff in and finding even her mom already in the kitchen, making themselves comfortable and cooking with something that smelled amazing. I introduced myself standard, polite dorm roommate protocol. Then went back and forth to my car, carrying in boxes of groceries and suitcases. Eve's mom was floating through the kitchen in pajama bottoms. I hardly blinked these days. Pajamas are practically a style statement. Since I don't have a meal plan and I hate wasting money on fast food, I brought a serious stash of groceries to keep myself fed. Another roommate, not Eve, had already taken up one cabinet with her things, so thinking nothing of it, I swung open another cabinet and was promptly greeted by a Tetris Tower of Eve's food containers and spices. Almost every cabinet was packed with her stuff. I guess my face must have given me away because Eve's mom glanced at me and sensing my annoyance, started shifting things around to make space for my things. I headed over to the fridge. Every shelf, every CRISPR drawer, even the door racks absolutely crammed with Eve's groceries. It didn't make sense. Most students with this kind of stockpile don't have a meal plan. Right? Out of curiosity, I asked, turns out Eve actually does have a meal plan. She told me she lives in the dining hall like she only needs the kitchen as a hobby. I figured that would explain the food, but when I checked the pantry, I found it wasn't food at all. It was filled with Eve's Messenger bags and randomly shoes. Yes, shoes in the pantry. After wrestling my suitcases in and wedging my food into whatever nooks and crannies I could find, I called it a night. I've been up since dawn and exhaustion one. The next morning Sunday, I wandered out of my room and saw Eve's mom calmly making tea in the kitchen. That's when I started to wonder why she hadn't gone to a hotel or just flown back home. Classes were starting Monday. Shouldn't she have left by now? Time slipped past and here's what baffles me. Fast forward to today. An entire week later, Eve's mom is still living with us. I'm not exaggerating. She eats, cooks, showers, and sleeps in the dorm like she's the fifth roommate. Every time I come back from class, if I so much as enter the kitchen to cook, Eve's mom materializes from their bedroom and asks if she can cook my food for me. No announcement. No. By the way, my mom will be staying with us. Nothing from Eve. She never said a word. And here's where I get conflicted, because Eve's mom is honestly very, very nice. She cleans up after herself. She sometimes washes my plates along with theirs, and she offers meals. She cooks to everyone. She's welcoming, generous, almost too generous. But the little things start to grind on me. She's always cooking seriously. From 9:00 AM until 10:00 PM taking over the kitchen for hours every day she fills up the fridge with even more groceries, burying anything. I bought somewhere in the back where I can't even see it, and the kitchen. She won't let me be alone in there. I hate cooking with other people hovering, but she's always right there. Most of all. She never asked or even confirmed with Eve if we were okay with her staying long term. Why am I hesitant to say something? I remember Eve's mom mentioning how expensive groceries are for her. So what if she can't afford a hotel room? If I told the RA she'd have no choice but to leave and she might actually have nowhere to go, that thought makes me feel guilty, like I'd be the reason she ends up in trouble. On top of it, Eve's mom isn't doing anything mean.
