Very high on Paul’s bucket-list in Armenia is the Orgov Radio-Optical Telescope. This promised to be our best URBEX experience. It is on a slope of mount Aragats. To visit the site, we had to pay an entrance fee and after some negotiation were able to park/camp just behind the entrance gate. The Orgov Radio-Optical Telescope, also known as ROT54, is a radio telescope. It was built between 1975 and 1985 and was active between 1986 and 1990 before its use was halted. It was again operation until ceasing in 2012. Subsequently, many attempts have been made to restore and restart the ROT54. It is an amazing site to visit and roam about. The ROT54 control room looks to come straight out of a James Bond movie. We are every time so surprised that you can roam these type of places in Armenia and Georgia. After we returned from our walk-around, the guard/care-taker invited us for some tea in the guard house. Paul made the mistake to bring some Ararat. With a bit of German and Google Translate we were able to understand each other. We had a great evening with food and too much drink (for Paul).
