Farmers in Wautu and nearby villages in Kilungu, Makueni County, are now growing crops with the help of sand dams. Makueni is a semi-arid area that receives very little rainfall. But with sand dams, local farmers are able to trap and store water, making it possible to irrigate their farms. So far, nearly 1,000 farmers are benefiting from this project. The work is part of the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action program in Kenya. This is a five-year project by the Government of Kenya with support from the World Bank. The program helps counties plan and carry out local solutions to climate change. It also gives funding and training to communities so they can better deal with drought, floods, and other climate challenges.
