A fast local hit the buffer at the end of platform No 3 at Churchgate on Sunday morning and crossed 10 ft onto the concourse before stopping. Miraculously, no one suffered serious injuries. Railway officials said the incident, which occurred at 11.20am, was unprecedented in Mumbai, though there have been instances of trains crossing the halt line, but stopping after hitting the buffer. Forty suburban trains were cancelled because of the accident. The impact of the collision caused the first coach of the Bhayander local to sever from the wheel base, lunge forward and rest a few feet above the concourse. Motorman L S Tiwari was unhurt though his cabin was mangled and its windscreen smashed. Railway authorities blamed him for the accident, stating the cause as human error. Tiwari has been suspended, along with the train's guard and a loco inspector. He was subjected to a breath-analyser test immediately after the accident to check if he was drunk on duty. The result was negative for alcohol. His blood samples have been sent for medical tests. Five passengers suffered minor injuries. Three were given first aid at the station and two, including a woman, were taken to GT Hospital near Crawford Market, but discharged after some time. "Since it was Sunday morning, there were few people on the train," said WR general manager S K Sood. In his statement to Western Railway, Tiwari has said he applied the brakes but they failed. Sood said no braking problems were reported at any of the train's stops before Churchgate. Officials who inspected the train after the accident said that prima facie, no technical faults like faulty brakes are suspected. An inquiry has been instituted. Officials said the train entered the platform at 36kmph—instead of 30kmph as dictated by the entry protocol—and hit the buffer at 29kmph. As per the protocol, a train must slow down to 5kmph near the halt line.
