What if we told you that the very first ‘The Last Supper’ was not painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, but instead by one of Belgium’s own great artists? Dieric Bouts was the city painter of Leuven and a Flemish Master amongst contemporaries such as Jan Van Eyck and Rogier Van der Weyden. It was Bouts’ ‘The Last Supper’ in 1465 that came before Da Vinci’s painting in 1495-1498, and his works can now be seen across the world in London’s National Gallery, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York and the Louvre in Paris. 'The Last Supper' by Dieric Bouts, an absolute masterpiece, is undoubtedly the most important highlight of Saint Peter’s Church in Leuven. Moreover, with the exception of 'The Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus', it is the only artwork by a Flemish Master which, 600 years after it was painted, still hangs in exactly the same place for which it was intended.
