201 million years ago, at the end of the Triassic, intense volcanic activity which accompanied the breakup of Pangea spewed forth a cloud of aerosols into the sky which blocked the sun’s rays for several decades and ushered in a long volcanic winter that killed off much of the heavily-scaled archosauriform reptiles which dwelled in the tropics…except for the dinosaurs, which were able to thrive at higher latitudes and survive the oncoming winter thanks to their endothermic or warm-blooded metabolisms and Porto-feathery-insulations…snd here a flock of Coelophysis, male at the left and females at the right, feast on the corpse of a Desmatosuchsuchus that was killed by the freezing temperatures and lack of food … I’m working on an educational video about how the dinosaurs have been able to endure cold climates and freezing winters throughout their evolutionary history, and this is one of the drawings that will show up when the Triassic-Jurassic Extinction event is discussed.
