TRIAC is bidirectional device. TRIAC formed with combination of two thyristor. 3-terminal, 4-layer device which can control AC power. TRIAC can control max. 16Kw AC power. If A1 is forward biased with respect to A2, then the current flows from A1 to A2. Similarly, if the A2 is forward biased with respect to A1, then the current flows from A2 to A1. This two conditions are achieved whenever the gate is triggered with an appropriate gate pulse.  Construction: Gate terminal is common. Gate terminal connected to N and P region. So any polarity signal can be applied. There is no anode & cathode that’s why works for both polarity. Terminals are; main terminal MT1, main terminal MT2 and Gate terminal G. If we increase the gate voltage than break over voltage then TRIAC conduct. Without increasing this voltage we can conduct a TRIAC applying 35uS pulse. TRIAC has four modes of operation. MT2 positive and Gate G positive w.r.t. MT1 MT2 positive and Gate G negative w.r.t. MT1 MT2 negative and Gate G negative w.r.t. MT1 MT2 negative and Gate G positive w.r.t.
