Katarina Rukavina, MD, PhD, King's College London & King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, emphasizes the importance of increasing awareness of palliative care for individuals with long-term neurological conditions. She clarifies that palliative care is often misunderstood as solely end-of-life care, whereas its true focus is on improving quality of life by addressing physical, psychological, and spiritual needs through a multidisciplinary approach. Dr Rukavina is the co-chair of the EAN Scientific Panel on Palliative Care, which aims to establish evidence-based guidelines for improved standards and availability of palliative care for people with chronic progressive neurological diserase, as well as increasing the interest in palliative care though talks and educational courses. Dr Rukavina highlights that palliative care is central to healthcare and advocates for its inclusion in neurology training and practice to ensure better patient outcomes. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
