On Friday, February 27, 2026, technicians from Mural Colors were actively restoring the Temescal Canyon Mural in Pacific Palisades. Workers were seen removing an aged urethane coating from the more than 40-year-old artwork, a key step in the conservation process. Carlos Rael, CEO of Mural Colors, said the team is collaborating closely with the original artists during the restoration. “We have a couple of technicians working right now to remove an aged urethane coating,” Rael said at the site. “We’re working with the original artists. Kathy Salser is one of the original youth who is now coordinating the restoration along with Kat Kozik, who has also been involved in this process.” Rael noted that the restoration includes multiple phases, including coordination with community members and the local school. At the outset of the project, volunteers participated in what he described as a “bubble bath” — an initial surface cleaning to begin stabilizing the mural. The Mural Colors team expects to remain on site for several months as restoration continues. Additional community engagement opportunities are anticipated, with updates being shared on Instagram through the Temescal Canyon Mural page. The mural, painted by Palisades High School students and located across from the campus, survived the Palisades Fire but has shown signs of aging due to long-term exposure. The ongoing work aims to preserve and revitalize the landmark as the Pacific Palisades community continues rebuilding efforts. Santa Monica Closeup continues to document restoration efforts, public art projects, and community rebuilding initiatives across Pacific Palisades and the greater Westside. #TemescalCanyonMural #PacificPalisades #MuralRestoration #PublicArt #artconservation — ⚠️ 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝗬𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘 This video is protected by copyright and provided for personal viewing only.
