Meet the finalists of the Blue Met’s program, There’s Something About You. CONTEXT 10 English-language students have been nominated for outstanding essays about their sense of belonging in Quebec. They each have a dream project they’d like to carry out. Watch the videos, learn about their projects and vote for your favourite. The student who garners the most “Likes” will receive a $5,000 grant to turn their dream into reality, for the benefit the Anglophone community and Quebec as a whole. THE PROJECT THE BLACK BOOK INITIATIVE: AN INTERACTIVE, FUNKY & COMMUNAL ARCHIVAL TOOL Throughout the last centuries, there has been a systematic erasure of Black communities’ presence in Canada as well as in Quebec. Indeed, whether it is through the erasure of Quebec’s involvement in Transatlantic slavery or the federal government’s implication into the destruction of the historically Black neighborhood Africville in Halifax, Nova Scotia, national and provincial institutions have denied, or rather hidden, Black people’s historical presence on the territory by either destroying or failing to preserve their archives. The latter has led to big historical gaps preventing us from accurately recovering Black communities’ past experiences and daily lives. The Black Book initiative is a digital interactive, funky and communal archival tool which aims to respond to the latter issue by enabling Black communities all around Quebec, and eventually across Canada, to upload and share their archives – i.e. letters, pictures, and videos – with the world. This pedagogical project thrives to enable Black communities to take control of the archives which are left behind to commemorate their daily lives and experiences, and to ensure that their stories be known and recovered properly by current and future generations.
