This is a simple hand-cranked flashlight using a small brushed motor as a generator. Brushed motors make good generators, but since they have to spin very fast, they must be geared in some way. The ideal is to get a motor with the reduction already attached. Materials: a M&M candy tube (or something similar) to hold all the electronics inside; a N20 gear motor that serves as a generator (dynamo). These motors are extremely useful for robotics and automation, are cheap and are everywhere. Gear motors make great generators, this one can produce about 3.5 volts by spinning continuously; a rectifier bridge to transform the alternating current that comes out of the motor into direct current. The circuit would work without the rectifier bridge, but since the LED has + and - poles, it would work by blinking; the capacitor is also not absolutely necessary, it is only there to stabilize the current; a bright white LED. The size does not matter as long as it is 3 volts; a piece of plastic and screws for the crank. That blue fitting on the motor shaft is a 3mm shaft connector, but anything that fits on the shaft will work.
