Sindhi uses the alphabets of the Arabic script with some extra characters added. Here are the 38 letters of Sindhi. Each has a name that is given below the alphabet with the equivalent English sound of the alphabet in (parenthesis). The three diacritical marks used to represent the three short vowels are called ZABAR, ZER and PESH. The ZABAR is a small line segment over a character to represent the half-open vowel that is represented by the phonetic code . It is quite close to the English vowel.
