Journalism is supposed to show truth to power. In that sense journalism is the perennial rebel and outlier. But that has not been the case recently as most media houses have kowtowed to government and business interests. Among the notable few who haven’t, is The Wire – that has carved a niche for itself as the rebel among media houses, the outlier amidst outliers. And yesterday – on Gauri Lankesh’s birthday, they launched their Marathi edition at a function organised by cultural luminaries of Maharashtra, who had gathered at Shivaji Mandir in Dadar under the banner of ‘Let’s Unite’ to invite and apologise to Nayantara Sahgal for the ruckus in Yavatmal earlier this month. After the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan’s snub to Sahgal, personalities such as veteran actor-director Amol Pakekar, writer Jayant Pawar, writer-poet and linguistic scholar Bhalchandra Nemade, activist Pushpa Bhave and journalist Sandhya Nare Pawar among others came together to form a rebel platform to unite against oppression of freedom of expression.
