What’s up, Plastic Addicts? Today, we’re diving into the 1/1000 Klingon Bird of Prey from Polar Lights. I’ve built this kit before, and while it turned out well, I underestimated how long it would take to complete. The basic construction is straightforward, but there’s more cleanup required than you'd expect for a kit developed in the last five years. Other than that, there are only a few seams to address. Once you think you’re nearing the finish line, you realize the Bird of Prey features a detailed paint scheme with lots of different colored panels. Some may choose to mask and airbrush, but I opted to hand paint because I enjoy it, and I felt it would be more efficient for this scale. After painting, there’s still the crucial step of weathering to make the model come alive. I decided to try using oils for this instead of my usual powders and pastels. While it’s not overly difficult, it took some getting used to, and I had a few setbacks along the way. Using Q-tips for cleanup accidentally removed some of the weathering, including from recessed areas, so I switched to paper towels, which worked much better. I also learned the hard way about patience—I didn’t wait for the weathering layer to dry completely before cleanup, requiring me to reapply it. Overall, it was a valuable learning experience, and I’m excited to incorporate oils into future builds!
