What exactly IS the Winter Sowing Method, and how is it different from just sowing seeds in winter? The phrase "winter sowing" gets used to describe many different seed-starting practices: direct sowing outdoors, snow sowing, cold stratification in the fridge, greenhouse sowing, and container-based approaches like milk and water jugs. But not all of these are OFFICIALLY defined as the Winter Sowing Method (by the USDA)! In this video, I untangle the terminology, explain why the distinction exists, and clarify what actually qualifies as the Winter Sowing Method — including its history, definition, boundaries, and goals. You’ll learn: • Why “winter sowing” is often used casually to describe many different techniques • How the Winter Sowing Method fits within gardening and seed starting as a specific seed propagation method • The origins of the Winter Sowing Method and how it became formally recognized by the USDA • What the official USDA definition includes — and what it doesn’t claim to do • Why jug sowing, greenhouse sowing, and direct sowing aren’t always the Winter Sowing Method • How the Winter Sowing Method focuses on naturally timed germination instead of not early starts This is the first video in a multi-part winter sowing series. This video focuses on history, definition, and boundaries — not step-by-step instructions. In future videos, I’ll cover: • The knowledge areas surrounding winter sowing • Helpful winter sowing resources and YouTube channels If you’ve ever wondered: • “Am I actually using the Winter Sowing Method?” • “Why do people argue about winter sowing online?” • “Why do some seeds work great in winter and others don’t?” This video is for you! 📍 Hi, I'm Kendall. I garden in Western Washington (USDA Zone 8b), and I approach winter sowing with a background in education and research, especially with native plants and seeds that require cold stratification. ⸻ Videos I mentioned: 📺 PBS Wisconsin winter sowing video: • Winter Sowing: Native Seeds | Let's Grow S... 📺 Perennial Garden – “5 Ways to Winter Sow”: • 5 Ways to Winter Sow (with Reveal) + Our F... 📺 Rachel’s video: “How to Start Vegetable Seeds in Milk Jug Greenhouses”: • How to Start Vegetable Seeds in Milk Jug G... ⸻ 🌱 Subscribe to Kendall’s Greenhouse for the rest of the winter sowing series 🔔 You may need to turn on notifications to see future uploads. 💭 Comment below if you've tried the Winter Sowing Method!
