Carl Czerny (1791-1857) was an Austrian pianist, composer and teacher. He is remembered for his many volumes of demanding fingering exercises and “Etudes de Vélocité” for piano, but late in life he composed “Twelve Preludes in Church Style,” his Opus 627, for organ or harmonium. These are lovely, Schubertian pieces, designed to teach organ manual technique and the legato line, with fingering indicated for nearly every note. This “Andante con moto” in C major is the fourth piece in the set, played here on two treble 8’ stops with the Vox Humana. The instrument is a six-rank chapel-model reed organ built by Seybold of Chicago, c. 1904, retailed by Lyon & Healy (# 6463 in the Reed Organ Society database). This was recorded during the closing concert of the 2019 Gathering of the Reed Organ Society, in the Fayette Opera House in Fayette, Ohio. Performed by Michael Hendron; recorded 20 October 2019.
