Practice of Counselling Skills in Healthcare

The School of Skill Education at Tata institute of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Sukoon Nilaya Palliative Care Centre has successfully completed the first batch of our Short term Skill Enhancement Programme ( StSEP) in "Practice of Counselling Skills in Healthcare". This is a 4 months short term programme for healthcare and counselling professionals where they learn the skills to counsel patients with Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). At Sukoon Nilaya, it is our endeavour to train all healthcare professionals with the skills required to address the multiple and diverse needs of patients and families living with chronic, serious life limiting conditions. This collaboration allowed students an immersive learning experience where, for 2 weeks, students were placed at Sukoon Nilaya to participate in Ward rounds, Patient Care planning, and counselling, in addition to lectures from experts. We aspire to continue to empower and upskill healthcare professionals and make compassionate and holistic care available to all patients and families. This and the upcoming programmes are possible because of the collaborative efforts between the two organisations. It is noteworthy to mention that Dr Eric Borges, Hon. Chairman at the King George V Memorial Trust, Dr Leena Gangolli and their team as well as Prof Madhushree Sekher, Dean, School of Skill Education, TISS and her team members Dr Aswathy Pillai, Sr Manager, Healthcare and Shivranjani Kulkarni, Sr Manager, Skill Education and Counselling Unit have played a major role in this collaboration.
