Many people use Q-tips to clean their ears, despite warnings against it. It feels satisfying and seems like an easy way to remove earwax. However, despite advice against Q-tip insertion by healthcare professionals, this habit persists—whether out of routine, misinformation, or the irresistible urge to "clean" what often doesn't need cleaning at all. Here are some reasons why Q-tip use may not be a good idea (as well as safer ways to remove earwax described at the end). 1) Q-tips may actually get some earwax out… but can also just as easily push earwax deeper into the ear canal. (0:24) 2) Q-tips can also scratch the skin causing it to bleed. (0:36) 3) Even if it doesn’t bleed, a Q-tip skin scratch can also let germs in triggering an infection and a swollen, painful ear canal known as otitis externa or swimmer’s ear. (0:48) 4) Although the cotton end of the Q-tip is not supposed to fall off, it is not uncommon to do so in the ear canal which then requires a visit to a medical office for removal. (1:01) 5) A more serious risk is accidentally rupturing the eardrum by inserting a Q-tip too deeply, often due to an unexpected bump to the arm during use. (1:13) So what is a safe way to remove earwax? Flushing the ear with warm water using a device such as an ear syringe is typically recommended. You can purchase such devices over-the-counter (https://amzn.to/3hTGaWY). (1:26) Earwax can also be professionally removed with forceps, curette, or suction instruments. (1:42) If you have earwax or other ear canal concerns, do see your healthcare professional for further advice.
