※ This video is a segment from "Extreme Jobs – Enduring the Fear of 30m! Harvesting Tropical Fruits in Indonesia," broadcast on December 16, 2023. Indonesia, a paradise of tropical fruits where a variety of fruits grow abundantly all year round. Among them, there are those who climb trees as high as 30 meters to harvest the "king of fruits," durian, the chewy-textured jackfruit, and the widely loved mango. These workers risk their lives climbing dizzying heights to support their families. The King of Fruits, Durian! There are those who climb towering 30-meter trees without hesitation to harvest durian, the king of fruits. Up in the trees, the only thing keeping them safe is the rope that secures them to the trunk. To reduce the risk of falling, workers must keep their bodies as close to the tree as possible while working. Durians often drop from the tree naturally when they ripen, but if they fall, they get damaged, reducing their market value. To prevent this, workers must climb the tree and carefully tie the durians with ropes to secure them. Climbing the tree is something anyone can attempt, but balancing in midair and securing the fruit requires the skills of a seasoned expert. Since durians are covered in sharp thorns, workers’ hands are constantly wounded and calloused from handling them. Despite the pain, these workers continue climbing the trees every day to harvest durians and provide for their families. The Massive and Heavy Jackfruit! The harvest of jackfruit, the world’s largest fruit, is also in full swing. Jackfruit must also be harvested by climbing trees. The process involves selecting a ripe fruit, tying it with a rope to secure it, and then carefully cutting the stem with a knife. Since jackfruit can weigh up to 50 kilograms (110 pounds), it must be slowly lowered to the ground using the rope to prevent damage upon impact. The harvesting process requires a two-person team—one person cuts the fruit from the tree, while another waits below to receive it. Working high up in the trees comes with the constant risk of falling, and the sheer weight of the jackfruit requires considerable arm strength. After an exhausting day of harvesting, workers must also load the jackfruits onto trucks late into the night to transport them to the cities, marking the end of their long day. Braving Great Heights for Sweet Tropical Fruits From the "king of fruits," durian, to the world's largest fruit, jackfruit, these tropical delicacies are beloved for their sweet flavors. However, behind every harvest is the hard work of Indonesian fruit farm workers who risk their lives climbing trees daily. Extreme Jobs takes you into the dangerous world of tropical fruit harvesting, where workers scale towering trees to bring these fruits to market. ✔ Program Title: Extreme Jobs – Enduring the Fear of 30m!
