If you are watching this you probably already know more about the B-17 and its history than I do. Many excellent references are online to better detail this remarkable aircraft and their brave crews than I could include here, but here are some basic facts below. This is a remarkable experience sitting in the middle of four eighty year old engines producing a combined 5,000 horsepower. The average flight level for this flight was 1800 feet. The bombardier typically looked past his feet through the plexiglass from an elevation of 25,000 feet above Europe, then was met head-on by hundreds of German fighters firing their machine guns and cannons straight into the formation. In this flight many of the original gauges are still working. An excellent video of how the Drift Meter worked and many others related to the B17 can be found at this youtube channel, WWII US Bombers. • B-17 Bomber's Drift Meter Instrument, a Si... B-17 Initial flight - 28 July 1935 Number produced - 12,700 Currently flight worthy worldwide, about 5 Payload - 5,000 pounds Length - 74 feet Wingspan - 104 feet Crew - 10 Number of US Army Air Corps airmen KIA in Europe ~ 26,000 Until the P-51 Mustang long range fighter was produced that provided effective escort over Germany, air crews suffered shockingly high casualties on each mission in spite of the many onboard .50 caliber gun positions. The B-17 was neither heated nor pressurized. As missions were conducted above 20,000 feet the temperature outside the thin aluminum walls and plexiglass was typically -40F. The Navigator, Bombardier, and the entire crew performed their precise duties wearing an oxygen mask, gloves and a heavy suit heated by a wire running throughout. Thanks to the air and ground crew of the Commemorative Air Force who worked continuously through sweltering conditions this day to ensure that everyone was able to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Their dedication to the preservation of this aircraft and to the memory of the thousands of Americans who flew and sacrificed everything is commendable. https://commemorativeairforce.org
